Residents of the Fort and beyond will have their chance to put their names in a time capsule that will be built into a neighbourhood grocery store.

The Lee family is hosting a special ceremony Saturday, June 16, at the corner of Mavis and Glover in Fort Langley.

With the floor of the new grocery store about to be poured, Robert Lee has decided to bury a large thermos with a few newspaper articles about the store’s fiery destruction and resurrection.

Along with the news stories will be the signatures of everyone who attends the ceremony between 2 and 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The former IGA stood in Fort Langley for decades before it was destroyed in a fire on Jan. 4, 2011. The fire was the work of an unknown thief who tried to break in by cutting bars off a window. Sparks ignited a blaze that left Fort Langley without its only major grocery outlet.

Within weeks the Lee family had decided to rebuild, and a new grocery store is now partially constructed just to the east of the former site.

Former mayor and Fort resident Kurt Alberts is helping to organize the event.
He has asked local papers to bring copies of their stories about the groundbreaking held last year for the new store.

A plaque will be placed above the spot where the time capsule will be buried.
